At IITs, Computer Science students offered job packages worth crores
The initial phase of the placement season at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) has recently concluded, showcasing a remarkable trend of students securing lucrative job offers. Notably, over 60 students from IIT Delhi have secured annual packages exceeding Rs 1 crore, while an individual from IIT-BHU has clinched a staggering annual salary of Rs 2 crore.
Students specializing in computer science engineering (CSE) have emerged as top earners across various institutes, commanding higher salaries than their peers in other branches. Roles in organizations focusing on emerging technologies, such as machine learning engineers, decision analysts, and AI specialists, have witnessed increased demand.
As of the first week of December, a total of 87 companies spanning software and IT, finance and banking, analytics and consulting, core engineering, e-commerce, automobile, infrastructure, manufacturing, and healthcare have recruited students from IIT Patna for diverse profiles. The department of computer science and engineering (CSE) led in BTech placements with a remarkable 96 percent, followed by electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and chemical engineering. The highest packages were also secured by computer science students.
IIT Patna witnessed the highest domestic package of Rs 61.3 lakh per annum, offered to nine students by Oracle, a prominent American multinational computer technology corporation. Job profiles encompassed roles such as software engineer, hardware engineer, application engineer, product engineer, quant analyst, data scientist, digital consultant, manager, infrastructure analyst, machine learning engineer, digital engineer, decision analyst, consulting, management trainee, GET (Graduate Engineer Trainee), and PGET.
Kripa Shankar Singh, Training and Placement Officer at IIT Patna, emphasized that the most lucrative offers were either for core computer science engineering roles or related to emerging technologies like AI, machine learning, and data science.
At the conclusion of phase-I, IIT Kanpur secured an impressive 47 international offers, with the highest packages reaching USD 287,550 for international placements and Rs 1.2 crore for domestic ones. Top recruiters included Intel, Microsoft, OLA, Samsung, Quadeye, Uber, Tiger Analytics, and Axtria. Most of these companies are either technology development organizations or providers of technology-as-a-service.
IIT Ropar reported over 92 percent of CSE students receiving job offers in the first phase, followed by mechanical engineering (72 percent), civil engineering (74.07 percent), and metallurgical and materials engineering (72.73 percent).
Subodh Sharma, the placement officer at IIT Ropar, highlighted that, as per committee recommendations, the highest package could not be disclosed. However, students from CSE received the highest-paying job offers across software development, core engineering, consulting, analytics, and finance domains.
During the first phase of placements at IIT (BHU) Varanasi, students received a total of 1,185 job offers, including 35 international offers. The highest package was Rs 2.15 crore per annum from Uber. Pramod Kumar Jain, Director of IIT (BHU) Varanasi, noted that the Computer Science and Engineering branch secured the highest-paying jobs, with an average CTC of Rs 44 lakhs, surpassing other departments. He also highlighted the significant rise in placement figures, with the electronics and electrical engineering departments securing average packages of Rs 29 lakhs per annum and Rs 28 lakhs per annum, respectively.
