The way we perceive travel in the post-pandemic era has undergone a significant transformation. It has instilled a heightened sense of caution and awareness of our surroundings. Although the administrative aspects of travel have become more intricate, there is a noticeable eagerness among individuals, particularly those vaccinated, to venture out and rediscover the joy of exploration.

Booking.com, a digital travel company, recently unveiled its ‘Travel Predictions 2022 Research,’ shedding light on the evolving landscape of travel in 2022 and the escalating reliance on technology. The research predicts that technology will play a pivotal role in facilitating spontaneity by offering increased flexibility for on-the-go bookings. A majority of travelers are inclined to rely on their preferred apps, with 76 percent of Indian travelers acknowledging that technology significantly alleviates the stress associated with travel.

The report indicates that 72 percent of Indians are embracing the latest travel technology innovations for an element of surprise—a ‘wildcard’ experience based on past preferences or budget considerations. From AI-powered translation services streamlining communication with hosts and rental car providers who may not share the same language, to machine-learning models notifying hosts about a delayed arrival due to a flight delay, technology is poised to enhance travel experiences in 2022.

Anticipating the year ahead, travelers are expected to make more informed decisions. A substantial 79 percent express interest in an innovative service capable of predicting travel-safe countries well in advance or recommending destinations based on current Covid requirements. This desire for foresight extends to 77 percent of respondents who are interested in suggestions for easily accessible destinations based on both their home country’s and the destination’s current Covid requirements.

Ritu Mehrotra, the Regional Manager, South Asia at Booking.com, commented on the findings, noting the profound shift in traveler attitudes and behaviors over the past year. As we navigate this unpredictable new normal, Mehrotra emphasizes the continuing role of technology in fostering connectivity within the travel community and the industry’s ongoing commitment to flexibility.
